Mississippi Delta Railroad
Cotton and the Blues
This is the Mississippi Cotton Delta at its best and home of the BLUES. They are proud to be the home of Ike Turner, W. C. Hardy, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and many others. One of my favorite actors, Morgan Freeman, owns a restaurant in Clarksdale. The Mississippi Delta Railroad is part of the old Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad, which was later purchased by the IC in the 40's. It has over 1000 car loadings each year and is run by Patti Howell, often the engineer, and Reggie Howell, the Conductor/Trainman. They also do track work, locomotive and car repairs, and anything else that is needed for the successful operation of a railroad. We will have an exciting motorcar excursion run on the Mississippi Delta Railroad on Friday, June 3rd, Saturday, June 4th, and Sunday, June 5th. The Mississippi Delta Railroad has never hosted a motorcar excursion before. Maybe we can make it an annual event. The mileage for all three days is approximately 135 to140 miles.Cost: $145.00 for all three days. Limit 30 cars. No refunds after May 3, 2005Registration forms are available in PDF format, or by sending your name and mailing address to Atlanta Railcar Transportation, 3520 Cold Spring Lane, Chamblee, GA 30341. A map is attached. The SLC RR is located in the largest alpine valley in the world, in which the floor lies 7,500 feet above sea level. The length of the valley from north to south is over 80 miles, and its greatest width is approximately 50 miles. Nestled high in the Colorado Rockies, protected by 14,000 foot peaks, the San Luis Valley offers breathtaking scenery year round. The San Juan Range on the west is the continental divide. The spiny Sangre de Cristo Range on the east is one of Colorado's tallest mountain ranges. Mt. Blanca, the fourth tallest peak in Colorado, at 14,345 feet, towers over the San Luis Valley. Also, advised is protection against Colorado s strong UV Radiation at this altitude, West Nile Virus and High-altitude dehydration. Sept. 17, 2005 (Saturday)
Midland Railway
Baldwin City, Kansas This will be our first ride on the Midland Railway tracks from Baldwin City to Ottawa, Kansas. This line is an operating tourist railroad with some very unique equipment. I'm especially partial to the two Rock Island E-units which have been restored to their original paint schemes. The line is an ex-ATSF branch line which formerly ran between Ottawa and Lawrence, Kansas. The ride will be 14 miles each way and we will run twice on Saturday working around their tourist train on the second trip. We are also hoping for a Friday night run for early arrivals but this has yet to be approved. There is a nice park in front of the depot for anyone wanting to picnic or there is a nice restaurant in Baldwin City which is about a mile from the depot. While we're in Ottawa where we turn around, we'll be at the junction of the BNSF mainline between Chicago and L.A. so there will be a very good chance that we'll see some of the 80+ freight trains which pass daily. The Midland RR runs a very professional and first class operation which will be enjoyed by all who attend this first ever opportunity to ride their scenic line. Set on will be near the Baldwin City depot at the extreme west edge of downtown beginning at 7:00am for the first run and everyone should get their early so the cars can all be inspected prior to departure at 8:30am. Our second run will be around 1:00pm where we will follow one of their passenger trains. Cost of this ride will be $30 per car. There is a nice motel, The Lodge, in Baldwin City (785-594-3900) and we're hoping to secure a group rate. Be sure to mention the First Iowa Division when making a reservation For further information, please contact Carl Schneider, 1302 6th Ave SE, Altoona, IA., 515-967-5181 This is a First Iowa Division ride.
