Potlatch Lumber Co. began the construction of the WI&M in 1905. In 1906 it reached Potlatch, ID and in 1907 Bovill, ID. For three years PRO members have given rides at Potlatch to celebrate Potlatch Days as a money maker to help restore its historic depot. Last year was its centennial. This year PRO members will extend operations to include Bovill which celebrates its 100th birthday in 2007.

On Saturday, July 14th, cars will set on the tracks of the St. Maries River Railroad at Bovill, ID. Members will give rides to the public over 5 miles of STMA track between Bovill and Purdue between 10 am and 4 pm. That evening we will reload the cars and drive to Potlatch and set on. On Sunday, July 15th, members will give rides to the public over the tracks of the Washington & Idaho RR between Princeton and a point 4 miles west of Potlatch between 10 and 4 pm. Sunday prior to 10 am, operators will have a chance to tour the 20 miles left of the WI&M between Palouse, WA and Harvard, ID before giving rides. All proceeds from both day's events will be donated to the Bovill Historical Group and the Washington, Idaho & Montana Railroad Historical Society. Last year we earned over $1,500 to help support the Potlatch depot renovation.

PRO needs at least 12 cars each day to make this work. 15 would be better. No one who is a NARCOA member will be turned away. Since NARCOA insurance will be used both days, participants will need to have current NARCOA insurance and NARCOA operators' certificates. A $20 fee is required in order to pay for the insurance and set up. This covers both days. For more information and reservations email Meet Coordinator Bill Taylor at (406) 721-2351. MOW will be doing their bi-annual work party/excursions on the Nevada Northern Railroad in Ely. NV. The Nevada Northern is a great “Living Museum” and we have volunteered many hours in the past to clean up weeds and sage brush to reconditioning buildings. There’s also about 22 miles of railroad that we are allowed to run on between Ely, up to the town of Ruth where the Copper Pits are located, to McGill where the Smelting Plant used to be. It’s beautiful country, the weather usually is warm but not roasting, and the museum folks treat us like gold. On Labor Day weekend the town also celebrates with their annual Planes, Trains and Automobiles festivities. Some of us camp on the grounds and many stay at the local hotels. The fee is $20 which includes the basic membership to the Nevada Northern Museum. For more information please email Doug Jensen. The town of Auxvasse, MO is planning to call Sept. 2, 2007 Railroad Days with several attractions - flea market, etc. Food will be available for a small fee by the Auxvasse Volunteer Fire Department and others. They, with our set on and set off, will ask the Ozark Valley Railroad to bring their engine for tours that day..  Also maybe an ice cream social for the afternoon trip may be in the works.  Everything is in the planning at this time but it sounds like they plan to make this a yearly thing.  Also, there is talk of a mock depot being built next year for restroom facilities and entertainment.

We will run to Mexico in the morning with a set on time of 7:00am and a departure time of 8:00am.  This will be  42 miles round trip and we will also make an afternoon run following lunch in Auxvasse for a grand total of 84 miles for the day.  Our turn around at Fulton will be at the depot south of our turn around and set on location in June.  One of the attractions on this line is the 125' trestle over Auxvasse Creek.  Cost of this ride will be $45 per car and the railroad has set a 30-car limit which means we'll have to do an advance sign up, registration,  and payment.  Motel information and set on location map will be available in a registration packet to those signing up.  Please register early so we can get the packet out to you soon enough to make motel reservations and plan accordingly.  Send your $45 ride fee to Carl Schneider,  1302 6th Ave SE,  Altoona, IA  50009-2002 with a check written out to First Iowa Division.  This is a Narcoa-insured event and all Narcoa rules apply.  For further information, contact carl Schneider at 155-967-5181

Pioneer Valley Railroad

Pioneer Valley Railroad will host NERCA’s first Toys-forTots run on December 1st .  This will be a rain or shine (or snow) run.  With the concept approved by the railroad and the railroad honor that we picked them, the to are planning on going all out to make this a great run. The concept has been approved and now it is time to work on the details.   The railroad proposed that we run from Westfield, MA to Holyoke, MA.  They have offered to decorate one of their engines and a coach for the event.   I gather an engine with tinsel, but we will wait and see.  They are also offering to follow us with the engine and coach to Holyoke. Our plans call for a no-fee event, but a donation of $30 to $50 in new unwrapped toys for boys and girls.  Cash contributions would also be accepted.   NERCA will provide the standard NARCOA insurance policy for the event. The suggestions have been made that we could offer buys and girls from selected agencies a one in a lifetime ride in a motorcar.  To offer more the opportunity, they would ride the train one way and the motor cars the other way.  I am asking that as many people as possible be able to offer a deserving youth a ride on your motorcar.  This option has been offered and I am asking all members to participate if possible.  We will be working with other agencies in the towns covered to make this a run that you will remember and cherish for years to come.  The railroad will be supplying refreshments (maybe D-O-N-U-T-S) to all participants of the event. As this is our first run like this, both the railroad and I am looking for any other input that would make this a great community project and one that you will also want to attend.   You input is encourages.  Please don’t hesitate to call or email me with your suggestions. CPE is pleased to announce the “Toys for Tots” ride on the North Shore Railroad.  Don’t miss this ride!! We did this ride in 2006 and collected an entire van load of toys for the Toys for Tots program. This ride was well publicized last year and NARCOA members collected toys along the railroad. There will be prizes for the cars that have the best Christmas decorations. Last year we had lights, wreaths and even an operating Lionel train on a high railer. This is a NARCOA insured event. Cost for the ride is a new, unwrapped toy (or 2, 3, 4 or however many you want to bring) and $50. Send a check to Central PA Excursions, PO Box 145, White Deer, PA 17856.
