Georgia Northeastern RR
|
Canton to Elizabeth to Canton 44 Miles RT. This will be a most special day for those of us that have ridden motorcar excursions on the Georgia Northeastern Railroad for over 15 years and for those that have not. I have often been asked to see if I could arrange for a motorcar excursion on this last section of track. This section of track has many grade crossings, which must be flagged. For this reason, this motorcar excursion will have several special requirements, we have not seen before. It is possible that our starting and ending point may be changed and you will be notified before the excursion. Unless cancelled, we will run, rain, shine, or snow. Requirements: You must be a member of NARCOA, have NARCOA Insurance, and have passed the Rules Test. All cars will be inspected. All NARCOA rules will apply. No refunds after February 14, 2008 unless the excursion is cancelled. All operators and passengers must wear a Safety Vest/Shirt while on railroad property. A mobile VHF radio capable of receiving railroad frequencies is strongly encouraged. You must have at least one passenger that is capable and willing to flag many ‘group crossings’. Please make your check for $75.00 payable to: Atlanta Railcar Transportation LLC (Affiliate) c/o Bobby Moreman (EC), 3520 Cold Springs Lane, Chamblee, Georgia 30341. Eastern Washington Gateway RR |
Pacific Railcar Operators is pleased to announce a motorcar excursion over the Eastern Washington Gateway RR (a division of U.S. Rail Partners) May 10-11, 2008. Set on will be at Wilbur, WA. On Saturday May 10th we will run Wilbur to Cheney and return (152 miles round trip). This day will include a visit to the site of the Inland Empire Railroad Historical Society's new museum at Reardan and an activity on site. Sunday May 11th we will travel Wilbur to Cooley City and return (72 miles round trip).
The Northern Pacific built its Washington Central branch from Cheney 112 miles to Coulee City in 1889 in order to reach the rich grain country of the Columbia Plateau. It would later become the northern part of the "Big Bend" line when the southern end was completed to Connell in 1910. The branch was very important to the building of Grand Coulee dam in the 30s. The connection between Coulee City and Moses Lake was abandoned in the 1980s. BNSF operated the Wilbur portion until its sale to Watco. Watco disonctinued service on the branch in 2006. It recently was purchased by the state of Washington. U.S. Rail Partners formed EWGRR to operate the branch.
The run east of Wilbur will be through the Eastern Washington scablands formed by the great Lake Missoula floods during the last ice age 15,000 years ago. Rolling country, pine forests and scoured landscape mark the scenery from Reardon east. The run west from Wilbur will be through the rich grain country of the Columbia Basin.
All participants must have 2008 NARCOA insurance and current NARCOA operator's cards. PRO membership is encouraged. All NARCOA rules and guidelines are in effect. Spark arrestors are required on all cars. Packets with itinerary, lodging (RV) and restaurant information will be mailed upon receipt of payment. Run fee for the weekend is $215.00. Camas Prairie Railroad - FULL - Waiting List Only |
Pacific Railcar Operators is pleased to announce the third annual Memorial Day Weekend motorcar excursion on three branches of the former Camas Prairie Railroad (CSP) on May 24, 25 and 26, 2008. The initial set on point will be at the headquarters of the Great Northwest Railroad in East Lewiston, Idaho. On Saturday we will run the old CSP third sub (now the Great Northwest Riparia branch) Lewiston to Riparia and return, traveling along the Snake River and past two dams for a total of 144 miles. The Great Northwest management has graciously allowed us to use the Lewiston yard as our base of operations for Sunday and we will run Lewiston to Kamiah along the Clearwater River on the former CSP first sub (now the BG&CM Kooskia branch) and return, a total of 129 miles. We will have to trailer our cars to Craigmont for Monday’s trip as the BG&CM is currently storing cars above and below Culdesac. The first leg will run from Craigmont to milepost 18, turn on a planked area there and return to Craigmont. This turnaround spot is not a road crossing, hyrail vehicles will be unable to turn at this location. Because of this, any hyrail vehicles in the group will be set off at Reubens and the occupants will catch a ride down the hill and back with motorcars. When the group returns to Reubens, the hyrails will set back on. The second leg is from Craigmont to milepost 44 and return for a day total of 52 miles.
There is a limit of 32 cars for this excursion. A waiting list will be maintained on a first come – first served basis and late entries will be notified of their status on the waiting list. This year both railroads insist that all motorcars and hyrails be capable of turning at the end of each leg of the excursion. Neither railroad wants any equipment operating in an extended reverse movement and because of this, cars that cannot be turned will not be allowed to participate. Also this year we require that hyrail vehicles comply with rule 12.1 (E) of the NARCOA operations handbook and carry enough blocking and other materials needed to re-rail the vehicle in case of derailment. We strongly urge all A series cars to do the same.
Run fees for the weekend are $295 and no refunds will be issued after May 1, 2008 unless the vacancy can be filled from the waiting list. Make checks payable to Pacific Railcar Operators and mail them to Meet Coordinator Steve Taulbee, 2206 Burrell Avenue, Lewiston, ID 83501.
For more information contact Meet Co-Coordinators Steve Taulbee, (208) 746-5430, or Jim Morefield, (208) 743-0802. NARCOA insurance, NARCOA Rules Certification, PRO membership, spark arrestors and mechanically sound motorcars with all the specified NARCOA equipment are required. Packets with itinerary, motels, restaurants, camping spots and maps will be mailed after payment is received. As before, Lewis Clark State College is hosting the NAIA college baseball world series the same weekend. Once the field is set, the teams and fans will start to reserve rooms in Lewiston. Usually by the first of May, all available rooms are booked for this weekend. |

Thursday, June 12th we will set on MRL's Bitterroot branch near Missoula and travel to Hamilton (perhaps Darby) through the heart of the Bitterroot Valley, the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge and along the Bitterroot River over the ex-Northern Pacific branch built in 1888. (100-120 round trip miles).

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad |
| Join us in August 2008 as we again ride this scenic mountain railroad. From our set-on at the engine house in Ridgeley, WV, we will travel past the former Western Maryland Railroad station, through the narrows, and up the mountain to Frostburg. As we await the arrival of the steam powered passenger train, we expect to turn the speeders on the turntable, and then return. Approximate round trip mileage will be 34 miles. We hope to be off the rails by 3PM, giving everyone an early trip home. This excursion will be a great way to complete the weekend for those riding the SBVRR excursion on Saturday August 2. This will be a Northern Central Railcar Assoc. excursion. All NARCOA rules will be enforced. All cars will be inspected. There is a 40 car limit. Price for this excursion is $40 per car. Finger Lakes Railway |
| As always, the Finger Lakes is going to be of those runs that we try to make a little different each year and this year is no exception. For the past two years we have offered night runs to the old Army Base in Romulus. And we have had request to see what it looks like during the daytime. Saturday morning you will have your wish. And in late morning we will head East for Cayuga Lake and the same BBQ as last year. We will venture out to Auburn and back for a rest in Geneva before our ‘night run’ to the Army Base. Sunday, we will run from Geneva to Victor on the new track that the Finger Lakes started operating last year from the Ontario Central to Victor, NY. Included will be a box lunch from the BBQ caterer. I will have to pass on a vote for which is better, the food or the railroad. You be the judge. RT miles are 114 RT on Saturday and 60 RT on Sunday. Excursion fee is $175. Extra meals at 7.50 per person. Excursion Coordinators: Warren Riccitelli / Al Elliott Contact: Warren Riccitelli, 39 Jacksonia Dr. North Providence, Rhode Island 02911 Phone: (401) 232-0992 |
